From Guest Lecturer Dr. Courtney Mason, we were able to learn more regarding indigenous protected areas. The Edéhzhíe which is a plateau rising from the Mackenzie Valley to the west of Great Slave Lake was designated an indigenous protected area (IPA).

” Elders have referred to the Horn Plateau as a critical food harvesting location that has sustained communities for many generations” (Mason, 2018). It’s important that these lands stay protected as local communities are encountering difficulties in keeping the food secure due to issue like climate change.
